What Is IVF Is It Same As Test Tube Pregnancy?

IVF is an acronym for in vitro fertilization (‘in vitro’ meaning ‘in glass’). As such, it is also called test tube pregnancy. It is a non-surgical process by which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the womb. The process typically involves hormonally controlling the ovulatory process; removing ova (eggs) from the woman’s ovaries and letting sperm fertilize them in a fluid medium. The “fertilized eggs” (or embryos) are then transferred to the patient’s uterus with the intent of establishing a successful pregnancy.

Why is IVF Recommended?

IVF refers to In Vitro Fertilization. IVF is the process of fertilizing an egg outside of the women's body. A woman has two fallopian pipes that transport the egg from her ovaries to her uterus. But if both pipes are blocked or a woman is infertile, IVF is performed. The doctors fertilize the egg with sperm in a special lab dish. The embryo grows in a culture medium until it can be implanted in the woman's uterus.

What Causes of Female Infertility?

Infertility is gender-neutral. It affects both men and women of all ages, regardless of socioeconomic status, education level or race/ethnicity. While infertility disproportionately affects women, 1 in every 3 cases involves male factors with the remaining cases due to a combination of female and male factors.

What are Risks of IVF?

Multiple pregnancies & Ovarian Hyper stimulation Syndrome (OHSS) – The likelihood of having multiples after in-vitro fertilization (IVF) is approximately 20%, while the chances of an ovum (egg) dividing to create triplets are very slim at only 3%. It’s important to mention that ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome is a potential side-effect that can occur during fertility treatments such as IVF. Symptoms of this syndrome may include ovarian enlargement, fluid accumulation in the abdominal region and gastrointestinal problems. However, severe cases which develop due to high dosage ICSI/IVF drugs for example are extremely rare.

How is IVF Done?

The various steps involved in IVF Procedure are:

Patients develop strong uterine contractions and eggs are retrieved through a needle during ovulation. The embryos can then be incubated or frozen for later use. Surgical Embryo Transfer (SET) is the process through which an embryo is transferred into a woman's uterus after fertilization. A thin tube is inserted into the mothers' womb and each embryo individually placed in the right spot before being sealed inside with the help of a soft glue-like substance. A blood test is performed 2 weeks later to check for pregnancy. If successful, one or more embryos will be implanted in the uterus, resulting in a pregnancy that is just like any other.

Procedure
  • A doctor decides on the protocol and mode of treatment based on a thorough examination. This includes looking at details from previous treatments, years of marriage, age and medical history. When considering male causes, it is important to consider where to find healthy sperm for fertilizing the eggs.

Vitrification

Depending on the state of the uterus, we also have to decide how long to keep the eggs on ice before undergoing embryo transfer. This method of freezing, known as vitrification, guarantees optimum results.
